چکیده

Many different species of the family Enterobacteriaceae have been shown to possess fimbrial appendages which emerge from the bacterial cell as straight, rigid organelles distinct from flagella (14). The role of fimbriae (synonym: pili) as adhesins in both enterotoxigenic and uropathogenic isolates of Escherichia coli has been demnonstrated, and thus the identification of such appendages as virulence determinants was established. Enterotoxigenic E. coli strains possess a number of distinct antigenic types of fimbriae facilitating attachment to the epithelial cells of the gastrointestinal tract, and these have been reviewed in detail elsewhere (18). Similarly, the fimbrial adhesins of urinary isolates of E. coli and the role of these fimbriae ir facilitating colonization of uroepithelial cells have been the subject of extensive investigation (25, 32). Consequently, this review concentrates on recent developments as they pertain to fimbriae of members of the Enterobacteriaceae other than E. coli, and E. coli antigens will be considered only in comparison with heterologous fimbriae.

Characterization of type 1 and mannose-resistant fimbriae of Erwinia spp.

Type 1 fimbriae from Erwinia carotovora subsp. carotovora and mannose-resistant fimbriae from Erwinia rhapontici were purified and characterized. The type 1 fimbrillin had an apparent molecular weight of 16,500; that of the mannose-resistant fimbrillin was 18,000. The amino-terminal amino acid sequences of the two fimbrillins were related, but tryptic peptide maps showed significant differences...

Genome-wide screening of genes required for swarming motility in Escherichia coli K-12.

Escherichia coli K-12 has the ability to migrate on semisolid media by means of swarming motility. A systematic and comprehensive collection of gene-disrupted E. coli K-12 mutants (the Keio collection) was used to identify the genes involved in the swarming motility of this bacterium. Of the 3,985 nonessential gene mutants, 294 were found to exhibit a strongly repressed-swarming phenotype. Furt...

Enhanced Bioadsorption of Cadmium and Nickel by E. coli Displaying A Metal Binding Motif Using CS3 Fimbriae

Display of peptides on the surface of bacteria offers many new and exciting applications in biotechnology. Fimbriae is a good candidate for epitope display on the surface of bacteria. The potential of CS3 fimbriae of enterotoxigenic E. coli as a display system has been investigated. A novel cell surface display system with metal binding property was developed by using CS3 fimbriae. Short metal ...

Virulence factors and genetic variability of uropathogenic Escherichia coli isolated from dogs and cats in Italy

In this study, the association between virulence genotypes and phylogenetic groups among Escherichia (E.) coli isolates obtained from pet dogs and cats with cystitis was detected, and fingerprinting methods were used to explore the relationship among strains. Forty uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) isolated from dogs (n = 30) and cats (n = 10) in Italy were analysed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR...

Population variability of the FimH type 1 fimbrial adhesin in Klebsiella pneumoniae.

FimH is an adhesive subunit of type 1 fimbriae expressed by different enterobacterial species. The enteric bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae is an environmental organism that is also a frequent cause of sepsis, urinary tract infection (UTI), and liver abscess. Type 1 fimbriae have been shown to be critical for the ability of K. pneumoniae to cause UTI in a murine model. We show here that the K. p...
